Web Merchandising Tricks Stolen From the Mall
By Kevin Nunley

What's the difference between a potential customer window-
shopping in the mall and one who's browsing products on the web?
Actually, very little. They are, after all, the same people,
looking for the same essential things.

That is why you can adapt the best in-store merchandising
practices to fit the web. Here are a few ideas:

1. Highlight New Products - When you walk into a store in
the mall, they always have their newest products right up front.
On the web, you should feature your newest products on a
prominent spot on the front page.

2. Combining Items - In stores you'll often see signs
saying things like, "Buy Two for $30," when the regular price for
one of the items is $25. So, of course people are going to pay $5
more for two. Amazon.com is the current king of this kind of
promotion, offering two similar titles for one low price. You can
do the same.

3. Impulse Buys - When you reach the checkout counter in a
store, you suddenly find yourself presented with inexpensive
items that you sort of want. When your online customer goes to
checkout, offer some low-priced add ons to go with their
purchase.
